Visitor Transportation Strategy
STRATEGY: IMPROVE THE SERVICE AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION WE OFFER VISITORS
Excellent service is the foundation of the tourism industry.
At this point Metro Detroit does not have a favorable reputation for the service it provides to visitors. In recent research visitors were much more likely to describe members of our hospitality community as unfriendly as opposed to their counterparts in comparative destinations such as Chicago , Cleveland and Toronto .
Another service issue within Metro Detroit is our lack of a comprehensive public transportation system. Detroit is the largest metropolitan area without such a system.
The region must make a commitment to improving the quality of service we provide to our visitor groups.
Our strategic plan includes three priorities for encouraging service excellence:
- Sponsor specific and widespread job and professional enrichment programs
- Improve professional service standards for businesses participating in the region's tourism industry
- Support improvements and expansion of our current public transportation system
Strategic Targets:
- Implement tourism service educational programs developed by Disney and other industry service leaders throughout the region
- Sponsor a service educational program which seeks high enrollment of tourism industry employees
- Sponsor college credit programs with state universities offering tourism and hospitality courses through a new tourism extension program
- Champion public transportation initiatives
Short Term Action:
- Implement tourism service educational programs developed by Disney and other industry service leaders throughout the region
- Sponsor a service educational program which seeks high enrollment of tourism industry employees
- Sponsor college credit programs with state universities offering tourism and hospitality courses through a new tourism extension program
- Champion public transportation initiatives
Long Term Action:
- Add incentives to elevate service industry professionals to the level that they hold in San Francisco, Toronto and other major tourism centers
